Many different studies have shown how reading in the target language is helpful for second language acquisition. I have been pulling together reading resources on my own to have for free and voluntary reading (FVR) which takes place for 10 to 15 minutes every Friday. The purpose of FVR is for students to pick materials that interest them. By giving them choice in their reading materials, they will read more for longer amounts of time and enjoy the activity more. They will also acquire and remember parts the language that is important to them, thus using it more. With these new books and reading materials, students will be able to have a variety of books and magazine from which to choose, all at a level comprehensible to them, all in Spanish. Because they are language learners, traditional heritage language books that are comprehensible to them are books that are written for children, which for the most part will not interest my high school students. These books and magazines have been chosen specifically for their interest factor to high school students, as well as for their comprehensibility for second language learners.
