Theory on teaching and learning proposes that the arrangement and type of seating have an abundant impact on student interaction, engagement, focus, and enthusiasm for learning (McCorsky and McVetta, 1978). Currently in our classroom we have the traditional single seating arrangements. I would like my classroom to be more inviting to students and more conducive to learning. It is my desire for my students to fall in love with learning and want to go to school. Having a comfortable, welcoming classroom with flexible seating will help accomplish this. I would like to purchase a small couch, bar stools and table, floor pillow, and yoga balls for my students to have more choice in seating as they learn. I believe this would help my students focus, enjoy learning, and relax. Students prefer flexible seating and have more commitment to learning in an environment that feels more like a cozy home space than a cold, industrialized area of learning. With flexible seating, the students will be able to focus more, feel more independent, and have more ownership of their learning.
