I am the librarian at a Pk-5 elementary school seeking STEM designation in Tennessee. While our library has a wonderful array of books for students to choose from, I believe it is important to offer books to students that have characters that they can identify with. Through providing students the opportunity to access reading material in the library that offers a more diverse array of characters, we are giving students the opportunity to see themselves represented in books. By giving students reading material that offers the diversity represented in the actual world, it empowers them to write their own story and reinforces the fact that they can achieve ANYTHING.
