Many students in my district were devastated by Hurricane Harvey. The prevailing discussion when they returned to robotics class was how could robots save lives? Students researched and studied numerous robot options. The solution they choose were drones for Urban Search and Rescue (USAR). Drone operations increase evacuation times, reduce loss of life, and speed up recovery. Using USAR's the students would learn tele-op skills and real time problem solving. Through simulated challenges students will learn how to navigate a drone from a safe location as the drone travels over harsh terrain and through unpredictable environments. My students have decided to focus on using robots as a way to help recover from flooding in our community. They will discover that out of each tragedy our society learns how to use drones to improve and implement warning systems, direct first responders to locate people, and help people progress to healing sooner rather than later.
