Our students need more exposure to various types of genres. Exposing them to historical fiction like "Al Capone Does My Shirts" and crime genres like "Blackwater" can bring social skill situations to the classroom that can be discussed through the use of the literature. We have students who are resistant to utilizing the library and rarely check out books. We would like them to see that there are exciting books available that also can teach them about our history. Students will benefit from these novels because they promote higher level thinking. They will see how far science and medicine has come. They can begin to develop empathy for the individuals in the book that have disabilities. They will also be able to relate to the characters in the book because they are living in similar environments and dealing with some of the same struggles.
