Our children love engaging in dramatic play in the kitchen area. Here, they get to use their imaginations to their fullest capacity and make believe that they are chefs, doctors, parents, kings, postal workers, animals--the sky is the limit! A key component that our students are missing from our dramatic play center is high quality dolls that are inclusive and representative of the diverse backgrounds in our classroom and community. We currently have limited dolls available in our dramatic play area for the children to role play with. The dolls that we do have are very old and worn, and most of them no longer have clothing. Furthermore, these (primarily caucasian) dolls look nothing like most of the children playing with them. It is very important to us that our students feel fully represented in our classroom which is why we are specifically looking for dolls with varying skin colors, hair textures, and abilities. Dramatic play is a critical part of a child's experience in a preschool classroom. It allows children to not only explore their creativity, but also expand their vocabulary. Children develop essential social-emotional skills like empathy, responsibility, problem-solving, and self-regulation when they play with dolls. When a child changes a baby doll, they are not only learning persistence in completing a new (and often, challenging) task, but they are also strengthening fine motor muscles that are essential to their physical development! Dolls provide children with the opportunity to explore family relationships and learn from one another about how their families are the same or different. As you can see, there are countless ways in which something as seemingly simple as engaging in dramatic play with dolls can benefit a child's learning and help prepare them for a successful future!
