This project will compare the non-fiction books In Cold Blood by Truman Capote and Columbine by David Cullen. Having students read both of these books will allow them to truly compare writing styles, arguments, and characters. In Cold Blood is a staple of high school English classes as a trailblazer in the journalistic non-fiction genre. Students study this novel to learn how Capote crafts his narrative and how he represents each character of the book. More recently, the book Columbine by David Cullen, based on the true events of the shooting and meticulously researched, acts as a modern parallel to In Cold Blood. The comparison between the killers in each book is uncanny, as is the journalism and research. Students will take a deep dive into the structure of the writing in these books and draw conclusions about the similarities they discover.
