The students in this class are working with a program to improve their reading skills. It is an interactive program in which they watch video, read, improve spelling and writing skills and record themselves reading aloud for their own review and for teacher assessment. A lot of their current equipment is old, clunky, outdated and often malfunctioning headphones that the students are uncomfortable or embarrassed to be wearing. A lot of these students were affected by the flooding and devastation that occurred in the area from last year's Hurricane Harvey. They helped me hand pick the type of headphones that they would like to use in the class. Wearing these headphones to work on their program will not only help them to improve their reading, but also help them to feel better about themselves and not be self conscious about it while they work. The first unit they will be working on is about teenagers surviving and in fact growing from difficult circumstances in their lives, just as these kids will be recovering themselves.
