Every day when I begin my morning meeting, I hear students echoing my words from the first days of school. "Find a spot on the outside of the carpet!" Unfortunately, I have also heard the sounds of a hurt kinder buddy who got a finger squished, students pleading for friends to scoot over so they all have a space, and frustration about who belongs where. Although my students have become quite the little problem solvers and have managed to find a spot in the end, I dream of a day when I can relieve their distress with a rug that has space for everyone. From the moment my students walk into my classroom, they are racing to the carpet to get their choice of a spot on my tiny rainbow rug. The joy my students exude during our morning meeting, the pride through which they deliver their safe keeper ritual, and their excitement about greeting one another warmly is all dulled by the dismay of feeling that they have a place within this important school family time. As we moves on through our day, each lesson I teach begins and ends on the carpet with lots of movement, laughter, and cooperation in between. This rug not only seats 20 students, but it also provides a center focus point in which modeling and practice can be facilitated. This also gives me the opportunity to see and have close proximity to each student in the learning area. The oval shape is also ideal for students growing bodies. If students outgrow their spot or have difficulty sitting still, they will no longer be at risk of hurting their neighbors. Having the "Place for Everyone Carpet" would provide a perfect setting for my students to take their cooperative learning to the next level.
