Did you know that exposure to social-emotional learning (SEL) strategies in middle school can increase students' self-awareness, academic achievements positive behaviors both inside and outside of the classroom, improve their ability to identify their emotions, and promote healthy interpersonal skills? My students are still learning how to cope with the trauma they've experienced since the start of the pandemic, but they can't develop those skills alone. They need access to healthy coping strategies. Yoga is a powerful SEL (social-emotional learning) technique and has proven to be extremely beneficial for the emotional development of middle school children. The yoga mats I've requested will be used to offer a variety of yoga classes to my students, both during and after school. As a part of the restorative justice initiative at our school, yoga classes will be offered to promote stress and anger management, improve concentration levels, and improve students' overall sense of well-being. The essential oil diffuser will be used to ensure that each yoga session includes aromatherapy to enhance the sense of relaxation. At Ida B. Wells Middle School, we seek to promote an authentic culture of healing by helping our students develop the skills needed to be self-aware, empathetic, and confident.
