My students need subscriptions to Scholastic News and Science Spin to enhance their informational reading experiences. Second grade is the first year students are expected to read for information and while my students enjoy a good “story,” they don’t interact enough with informative pieces that help make the transition of reading for information smooth. Scholastic does an excellent job of publishing magazines that are attractive, on their reading level, and pique their interests as seven-year-olds. They can also use the magazine’s built-in comprehension questions to self-regulate and check their comprehension. Former students often come back to my class looking for extra issues to take home for their personal reading. The comfy seats will provide a nice place to relax and settle in for a good read.
