The novels would be used to teach literacy through engaging stories that encompasses the students imagination and the global world they now live in. All the novels picked, are written about topics that students now face in their everyday lives. These novels will be used to teach the standards in a way that is interesting and engaging to all students. It will give students a chance to read fifth grade leveled books as a class, individually and with a partner. It's a way to challenge my students socially and with their reading standards.
The Friendship War, discusses what it's like to suddenly break up with your best friend while trying to fit in to the world around you. It has engaging characters, and a story line my students can relate too.
Song For A Whale, discusses what it's like to be different and feel like you don't feel it. It discusses it through an actual physical disability that the main character has. It also explains how hard it is to be different and why we should embrace the differences that all people have instead of pushing people away.
The Unsung Hero of Birdsong USA, addresses racism in a small town and how we again have to learn to embrace our differences and even fight against inequality even harder now then ever before.
