Third graders and pencils. Sharp pencils are necessary. 8 year olds are particular about their writing needs. Unfortunately they are hard on pencil sharpeners. Students' natural curiosity gets the better of them: Will crayons fit? Will the eraser side sharpen? etc. Personal sharpeners leave pencil shavings everywhere as they fall out of desks. Mechanical pencils run out of lead refill rather quickly, not to mention its pretty entertaining to take apart such a pencil. The solution could be nice, sturdy electric sharpeners! Five classrooms and teachers would share these sharpeners. A few students each week would be assigned to sharpening the pencils as their job of the week. The electric sharpeners will be less labor intensive for the students and more efficient in actually creating a sharp point.
