The best way for kids to learn science is by exploring and discovering through hands-on experiments. In 5th grade, our students, use the researched based Learning Cycle Approach. This approach gives students a chance to explore, invent and discover. In order to provide this opportunity for science learning our students need science materials that match our curriculum. In 5th grade we learn about magnetism, electricity, and about the earth’s surface. Hands on experiments, in small groups, is the best way for our students to be able to manipulate materials and discover the properties of science. When students are free to explore they begin to ask questions and wonder and learn about science in a different way than from a lecture. Inquiry based learning helps students to ask questions. It also gives students a chance to create ideas. The science supplies would give our students a chance to engage, wonder, explore and learn about the world through science. The alternative seating, I am asking for, gives my students a child friendly area in my classroom. With the alternative seating my students have a fun area for small group work or a soft seat to read a good book.
