My academic sophomores comprise of half special education and regular education students. They come from homes that don't value writing and reading. By purchasing podcast equipment such as high powered audio microphones, students can record their narratives as podcasts. This practice is ideal for shy students who might not want to read their writing in front of an audience. Their narratives will be based on their virtual reality experience. I won VR equipment in a grant last year. Students can choose from a plethora of virtual reality locations to explore and write about. These places such as The Great Wall of China or the Northern Lights might inspire students to one day venture to them on their own. Further, since most of the students come from low-income households, this may be the only opportunity they have to travel. Students will choose what narratives they want to listen to on their own. Then, they will keep a log of what they listen to and write down positive comments on other students narratives. By having high powered microphones, the quality of the students podcasts will be superior and enhance the experience and their confidence. I plan on branching out the podcasts and having other English teachers use the microphones as well. Help us celebrate 21st-century writing!
