With these materials I intend to have my students build sail boats propelled by solar powered engines with fans. The idea is to have students build these boats and race them. the more efficiently built boats will move faster through water, thus, racing to the finish line. It all comes around to energy efficiency, and to get students thinking about how they can better conserve energy not only for this project but in their futures. Balsa wood, glue, strings, paint, and cloth will be used to construct and personalize each student's boat. the motor and fan will be used to push the boats across the water, the solar panels will be used to power the motors, and the shop lights will be used to simulate the sun for the solar panels. The project will get the kids thinking, as well as adding a little competition to a class that need to be doing something with their hands.
