I have tried my best to build up our classroom library, but one of the key elements that we are missing are graphic novels. My students have such a high interest in reading graphic novels during independent reading time but our classroom library only has a couple and our school library does not have enough on their reading levels. In my classroom, I have a very large population of English Language Learners (ELLs) and they would truly benefit from being exposed to these types of novels. The only books I have for some of my ELLs now are very babyish for 5th graders but it's all that I have that they can read without getting frustrated. If there were more graphic novels in our library, they could be exposed to more complex stories and characters but they would still be able to read the books with the support of the illustrations. Later this year we are also doing a comic book unit in writing where students will be creating their own comic book characters and following them through a series. Having exposure to graphic novels for inspiration will greatly support this writing unit.
