Through my years of teaching the fundamental skills of reading to young children I have noticed a few things. First, young readers need to be engaged and interested in what they are reading. Secondly, they need to feel successful when reading new or challenging text. Lastly, being in a comfortable and inviting environment puts my scholars at ease making them eager and willing to learn. The materials I have chosen for this project will entice young readers to want to read more! While I facilitate small group instruction to about five scholars at a time the remainder of the class will be engaged in meaningful reading activities. The reading comprehension activities I've selected will be used as centers for the children to strengthen previously taught skills. The bean bag chairs which are also listed will help give my scholars a comfortable place to sit while engaged in independent activities. Preferential seating options give scholars a choice in where they engage in learning. It also serves as an incentive to stay focused on the task at hand. With these items I will have a warm and inviting classroom geared towards scholar centered learning!
