My students are eager to learn but don’t love being crammed into a desk. I teach 3rd graders, a wonderful age where students are excited about school and are beginning to feel more independent and responsible for their learning. However, we currently have individual desks and it’s not the best option for our classroom community. My students love to have their own personal space, but also enjoy working with partners or teams. However, due to the limited amount of space in our classroom our desks tend to take up most of our useable space. Research indicates that if a child has a comfy space where they can relax a little they are likely to be more engaged, happy, and focused on their work. By providing seating such as pillows on a rug, exercise balls, or soft cushions students are able to choose the seating of their choice where they will be most comfortable and successful. I know, as an adult, I don’t enjoy sitting at a desk all day and do my best work where I feel comfortable. I currently have a student who prefers to stand at a counter in my classroom instead of sitting at his desk. By allowing this student to have that independence I have noticed a large increase in his focus and overall completion of his work. We would love to build a flexible seating arrangements in our classroom!
