In my class, we don't just learn about history. We explore it and the areas of the world. History is just mere facts unless you can see the world in which it happened. My students often cannot understand how Hawaii is so close to Japan (Pearl Harbor attack during WWII), or how close Russia's border is to Alaska. Wall maps are fine, but it would be nice for students to be able to reference these locations by having a globe in their hands and having them locate the places while learning about them. Last year I purchased a few of the inflatable globes that students could use in groups. It amazed me how students were fascinated with hands-on learning. By having them trace the paths of explorers, locate important battle locations and helping them to locate the equator and the countries near it, they become more familiar with our world.
