I am the librarian at Eastern Elementary School in Greenville, NC and have been for the past 19 years. My husband and I have been coaching our team for the past 5 years. We initially started the team with a grant from Pitt County Pirates, our local FIRST affiliate. Since then, we have had consistent growth with our team, including 3 trips to State tournaments. The 2020-2021 season was especially challenging. With COVID restrictions, our team was down to 5 students, our returning 5th graders, three of whom were virtual learners. Still, they persisted, learning to work together in a remote environment to program and collaborate on their project and the robot game. In the end, our team won 2 Innovative project awards, a robot game award and I won a Coach/Mentor Award. This month, at the end of our most successful, and difficult year, we watched our team of 5th graders graduate with more confidence and success than we have seen before. It was bittersweet, though, because that means we are starting all over with a new team of 4th & 5th graders this year ... the perfect time to roll out a new robot! We have been able to cover the cost of registration yearly but the extra costs for participation, travel and t-shirts gets expensive on our limited budget. In the end, a new robot set would have to come out of my library funding because every dollar in our school budget is accounted for, even before the school year starts.
