Flexible seating allows students to take charge of their learning and make the choices that work best for them. During independent work times they choose a location in the classroom that works for them. For example, students will be able to sit in one of the soft foam rocking chairs to independently read, or use a portable lap desk to work on their school-provided Chromebook. The new carpet will allow students to have a comfortable spot to read or complete their work. If students prefer to sit at a desk, there will be some kick bands available to get out some extra energy.
When learning is difficult for students it is essential to be comfortable in order to get the most out of their learning. Offering these choices in seating makes a noticeable difference in students' outlook on learning, even when it is very difficult. Overall, students are more engaged, and get more work completed than when they are just sitting at their desk. Students appear much more empowered when they are able to choose rather than being told where to work.
