I'm a new teacher to my school and I am so grateful to have an art room where my students can learn about the elements of art and experiment with a variety of art supplies. Many of my children come from homes that face economic hardship and struggles. Over the years I have had more and more students coming to class with a weight on their shoulders. They are becoming used to not having the regular comforts of home. I don’t want my classroom to be the same. I hope to provide my students with a comfortable space where they can be creative. Simple items in my classroom will transform my class from not just a place to learn, but a place to feel at home. Art books will inspire my student’s creativity. Decorative borders around their artwork on the wall will show them they’re important and give them confidence. Whiteboard markers in a variety of colors will allow them to focus on the important information on our whiteboard. A pencil sharpener will allow my students to have their basic drawing needs met so their sketching can flow and flow. If my students have these basic classroom supplies, then they can relax and enjoy our classroom. They will be able to read, draw, and take a break from the struggles they face when the end of day bell rings. I can not give them a home, but I can give them a place that feels pretty close to a home. A comfortable classroom that meets their basic needs and allows their creativity to flow.
