Simplified: Research presented in the text NeuroTeach supports 20-25 minute focused activity, and in our adolescents' world, technology is both a blessing and curse for accomplishing this goal and establishing strong habits for school and life. Though phones and other devices offer many helpful tools, they also offer incredible distractions, especially with the pressures of social media and constant interruptions, regardless of preferences. Research further proves that developing students need frequent uninterrupted time (ex: monitoring with a timer that doesn't tick down and distract), brain breaks as rewards at the end of designated time, and guidance to develop habits supporting focused activity vs rewarding procrastination. To help students develop these habits throughout the school year, the Soft Glow silent timer requested in this project provides support. In school, students can work independently, in small or large groups, or as a class using timers to focus for specific periods of time uninterrupted by technology (1, 3, 5, 10, 20, 30 min): the timer glows for the allotted time and then turns off, silently signaling transition, break, end of activity, etc. Likewise, students can track their focus time independently on homework and other activities without the distracting electronic device like their phones, which also beeps messages and other interruptions, thus stiffling strong study habits and focused content development. This timer is great for students of all levels, with any needs, and the activities described above have been tested in my classroom with the silent timer that I have personally purchased to use with my students: independent ownership/use for each student would only improve student performance (use in other classes, use at home for independent work/homework, more diversity in my classroom , the development of personal responsibility and strong habits, etc.).
