The Pulitzer prize-winning novel, The Sixth Extinction, will illuminate, horrify, and inspire my students. They will be swept away by Elizabeth Kolbert's incredible writing, getting to appreciate so many important anecdotes as she travels time and space to patch together the unprecedented devastation humans have done to the Earth over the past couple of centuries. The book will generate endless conversation and connections between our actions and their consequences. But, most of all, the book will force them to realize that their generation must unrelentingly learn about and implement ways to combat the worst effects of climate change. The one copy of Drawdown also included is so that the classroom has at least one book that can provide students with hope. While we are locked into change, there are tangible steps that must be taken, together, if we hope to avert scientist's worst scenarios we're headed towards.
