Due to the COVID-19-related closings of libraries and schools in Chicago, our students no longer have access to books. The majority of our families are low-income and many have been left jobless by the Covid-19 pandemic. They are deeply dedicated to their children’s education, but are unable to afford books and other educational resources that students require to learn at home. My goal is to purchase books at various reading levels that I can deliver directly to my children's homes, to ensure that they don't lose the reading gains they've made this year. The shelter-in-place order has been so difficult for our young students, who miss their friends and the sense of community they felt at school. The opportunity to read books at a home, and to then share about their reading in our online classroom, will enhance their online learning. Just as important, it will brighten their spirits and help them feel valued during this difficult time.

About my class
