Preschoolers learn through visuals. We use picture symbols with words throughout our classroom. One of the first ways children learn to identify letters of the alphabet is through the letters in their names. They love seeing their names in print on their cubbies and on bulletin boards! Some students use picture symbols to communicate their wants and needs. We create “boards” which consist of picture symbols. They may be pictures such as feelings, food choices, colors, or shapes. Preschoolers also learn new vocabulary words by seeing pictures which are displayed along with the written word. A color printer will help to make our Word Wall more interesting and appealing to all students.
