A balanced literacy program is vital to student success in kindergarten. In order for students to interact with new texts before they are readers themselves, they must have text read aloud to them. In our classroom currently, we have a large library of books that go along with a cassette tape, or a CD. In order for students to listen to books, they must each put on a set of headphones, and squeeze their bodies around a boombox, to which the headphones are attached and the audio plays, and share a few books- books that have been loved hard by decades of prior kindergarteners. With six Amazon Fire tablets, my students will be able to access texts at their individual reading levels, read anywhere around the room with our flexible seating options, and interact with books in ways that they simply cannot with a cassette tape and a paper book. This will give students so much more of a connection to what they are reading. Our district has provided accounts for every student to a literacy program in which students can explore these texts. All that is needed now is the equipment that can open a whole new world of reading to our littlest learners.
