Later in the school year, my honors freshman students will begin their study of the English literary canon's most famous love story, William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet. The play is wonderful on its own with its rich use of language and themes of love, violence, and fate -- but I know their learning would benefit so much from a modern connection. To enrich their studies in English Language Arts, my students need to read a book so captivating they feel like they can't put it down. John Green's The Fault in Our Stars is a highly engaging, young adult novel that has captured the attention of thousands of teenage readers. It pairs beautifully with Shakespeare's play as a modern tragic story of two star-crossed lovers. I believe bringing Green's novel into my classroom will help spark a love for reading in my students and deepen their study of Romeo and Juliet. My intention is for students to read The Fault in Our Stars after the class finishes Romeo and Juliet, and our studies will center on making connections between the two stories. In addition, the students will keep a journal, pulling passages they love from the story and describing their literary significance.
