My students' hands are too little for guitars, even the 3/4 size. I would like to teach them to play the ukuleles as young as kindergarten and first grade, but to really use them in 2nd -5th grade, and then continue with guitars into the MS and HS settings. These are great instruments to engage students in singing the folk songs of the United States, as well as other countries. As I have seen their excitement when I played my guitar and Ukulele while we sing, I realized that they would be so engaged if they could learn to play the ukuleles. Playing an instrument such as the ukulele will reinforce learning to feel the pulse of music, allow them to connect with the steady beat, feel patterns in music, boost aural skills, and be a showstopper for parents during our music programs. I have the students showcase their instrumental and vocal skills, as well as gross and fine motor skills in their music programs, special programs such as Red Ribbon Week, Veterans Day, and more. My students would be thrilled to get to learn to play these instruments that are truly a great size for elementary music students.
