Examples of reliable journalism are getting harder to find and even harder to discern from opinion. Upfront Magazine, from the New York Times, will give my students access to not only opportunities to examine relevant stories from events affecting the world, but material for a debate, analysis, and critical thought. Being able to manipulate an actual magazine will be a needed break from the screen. In AP Government and Politics, one unit is devoted specifically to political participation. Another focuses on resources of the effective citizenry, including the media. Having access to legitimate sources of journalism will allow students to use UpFront Magazine in both units, while simultaneously giving them exposure to topics requiring an examination of both sides of an argument. With any luck, students will get practice in civil discourse, a welcome change to what adults in our world are modeling for them!
