The purpose of this project is to encourage students to become more autonomous in the classroom. Often times they turn to me for guidance when they already know the answer! In order to promote independence and autonomy, there are two parts to this project. Part one of this project focuses on interactive science notebooks. Rather than keeping traditional notes, students will create interactive science notebooks. The right pages will hold notes we take as a class, while the left pages will be for students to "interact" with the content by writing questions, drawing models, and interpreting the content in any way they desire! This will also allow students with different needs (for example, visual learners or English Language Learners) to learn in ways that best suit them! These are the materials needed to create engaging and enriching interactive notebooks: spiral notebooks, pencils, pens, colored pencils, markers, highlighters, scissors, glue, organizational baskets (to hold art materials), and a document camera (used to demonstrate how to set up the interactive notebook pages and showcase student exemplars). Part two of this project focuses on mindfulness. Sometimes outside-of-school factors influence students' attitudes and behavior in class. As our school continues to incorporate social-emotional learning into the classroom, I would like to help students practice self-management by providing them with a space to take "brain breaks" whenever they might be feeling upset, overwhelmed, or otherwise distracted. This space would be known as the Mindfulness Corner and would be available to students throughout class. These are the materials I would like to put in the Mindfulness Corner: stress/fidget toys, colored pencils, markers, National Geographic magazines and books, and clipboards (for students who would like to continue to work standing in the back). Please consider donating to help my students practice autonomy and strengthen their voices!
