In this trip a group of low income third grade students will have the opportunity to travel to the International Civil Rights Museum in Greensboro, NC. Here they will learn about the Greensboro Four and visit a replica of Woolworth's Lunch Counter where the Greensboro sit ins took place. They will also learn about the Jim Crow laws and the effects of segregation, specifically in North Carolina. All the students participating are from low income households and many of them have not had the opportunity to travel outside of Charlotte. We were hoping to give them a memorable and empowering field trip experience that also allowed them to explore a city they had never been to before. We spend a lot of time in class educating our students on civil rights and teaching them about activists who fought to make the world a better place. This experience will allow them to further their knowledge in a location that was very important to Civil Rights history. We hope this will empower them to make a difference in their own lives and to speak up for those who are mistreated.
