Last year, I hosted a book club with my students, and I was thrilled with the success. The students engaged with the text, were excited to read, and participated in conversation about the text with peers. This year, my students have begged to do a book club again and to make it a tradition. To do this, we need more sets of books! With class sets of ten, we can all read the same text simultaneously and even reference the text during discussion. My students need to connect to the characters in their books. We need protagonists that represent our community. Graphic novels are wonderful because students of many different language levels can engage with the text in a way that fosters critical thinking and discussion. For this reason, I am asking for sets of "Anya's Ghost", "Drowned City", and "Lowriders to the Center of the Earth", all graphic novels that lend themselves well to discussion and critical thinking. "La Linea" and "A Step from Heaven" are both novels with characters and plots that my students will be able to make text-to-world and text-to-self connections with. Finally, I would like to complete my personal set of "Among the Hidden", the book we first used for book club. For some of the students, this is the first novel they read in completion, and they told all their peers how wonderful it was. I am excited to see my students reading these texts together and eager to hear their thoughts, opinions, connections, and questions about each one!
