Having additional options for seating in my classroom will reinforce our message that our students matter. The design of traditional classroom desks and chairs tend to be more about function rather than comfort. I would like to create a student-centered "coffee house" atmosphere in my classroom, where students can engage in scholarly discussion in comfort. Students spend 7+ hours per day, 5 days per week, sitting on hard plastic seats at hard plastic desks - I tried it for ONE day and needed to apply IcyHot before bed! The need for flexible seating is especially critical for students with special needs, as their discomfort often becomes a serious distraction. When students are comfortable, they are more engaged. When they are more engaged, they open their minds. When their minds are open, they become unstoppable!
