The books that I am requesting for my students will be utilized during book clubs, wherein groups of students will read texts together and discuss not only features of each text (characters, settings, etc.) but also the social and historical implications of these texts. These chapter books, including One Crazy Summer, El Deafo, and A Long Walk to Water, and others, feature complex and diverse main characters with different races, abilities, and nationalities. My students deserve to read texts that not only reflect themselves, but expose them to other cultures, genders, and abilities. I have carefully curated this list of diverse books not simply because they are diverse, but because they have themes and characters that are capable of resonating with the lived experiences of students in our community and school.
