My students are 7th graders in rural Mississippi. The school they attend benefits from a dedicated faculty and a highly involved community of parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles. Students' supporters want the best for their children. They ask for extra copies of homework assignments so they can help their children, they pick them up late so they can stay for tutoring, and they show up in droves for school events. The students are a vivacious, tight-knit, and extremely smart group. They have bright hopes for their future and are thirsty for information about college, career options, and other cities, states, and countries. The resources the school has to offer cannot keep up with the energy and intelligence of my students. There are very few books in the library, and they are outdated to say the least. The School Improvement funding we receive is helping to purchase lab equipment, manipulatives, and other supplies, but it simply cannot cover all the students' material needs.
