Developing a passion for reading is a life-changing development. Students who like to read, no matter their reading ability, are more likely to enjoy and be successful in school and are more likely to become life-long learners. It is vital, as a fifth-grade teacher, for me to do everything I can to help cultivate my student's desire to read. Competing in Oregon's Battle of the Books is the perfect way for my students to develop their love for reading. It is also a fantastic opportunity for my students to practicing working in teams to achieve a lofty, yet attainable, goal. Teams will read all 16 books on the reading list, and then "battle" each other by answering comprehension questions. The books on the list are really good books that were chosen specifically because they are interesting and relevant to upper-elementary students in Oregon. Once the "battles" are over, I look forward to adding the books to my classroom library to inspire my future classrooms.
