My students are English Language Learners at a very urban, public high school in Massachusetts. Most of the students have been in the United States for less than a year. And, like most immigrants, they have come to the US for a better life and they believe that a good education is the first step towards having a better life. They also recognize how important it is for them to learn English, not only so they can succeed in school but also so they can participate in society. Despite the fact that I speak Spanish, my students ask that I use English because, as one student often says, "how will I learn English if we always use Spanish?" In general, these students are very motivated to do well. They know how much other people have sacrificed for them. So they come to school everyday ready to work hard and learn, despite the challenges facing them.
