I am an art teacher of special needs children in Queens NY. I work with an Autistic population, and an emotionally disturbed and intellectually delayed population, comprised of mostly boys, ages 9-15. This proposal is aimed towards my emotionally disturbed groups. These boys are placed in a special needs environment because they lack basic coping skills, are prone to violence and are mostly academically delayed. I love every day of my job as no day is the same with this challenging group. I work extra hard to bring the best supplies and experiences to them from outside their small worlds. Art is one of those classes that takes the pressure off of them to read and write and there is nothing like it when a good project brings total quietude to the otherwise chaotic room.
