These books bring the experiences and voices of modern, undocumented workers front and center in our classroom. 30% of my students identify as Lantinx, making this source material culturally and historically-relevant to my history classes. This material is engaging and accessible to all students at varied ability levels. Through literacy, this project allows students to connect the experiences of immigrants today with those who flooded into the United States during the 19th century. It promotes empathy for the experiences of immigrants who share the same dreams as those from our past.
