Our first grade classroom embraces cooperative learning. It amazes me how the children guide and encourage each other as they work together. Flexible seating helps encourage collaboration and builds a sense of community for the children. Children learn best when they can control and make decisions about their work space. One day during a reading lesson a student stated, "But Mrs. Shiemke, I just don't feel right. It is hard for me listen. My legs are just everywhere." We discovered that a bean bag was a great option for her when she needed to be focused. I am hoping to add more bean bag chairs to my classroom with this project. During math, the students often play games with a partner. Using kinder cushions would allow the students to be more comfortable while working. Young children often get the wiggles. Sometimes boys and girls just need to move a bit and get refocused. An exercise stability disc provides a child with the opportunity to move while they work.
