At Vanguard we are lucky enough to go to school in walking distance to an urban cold-water creek called Buck Creek. While Buck Creek is very unique, it is also facing great dangers. Throughout the year my 6th graders walk to the creek to do water testing, macro-invertebrate testing and trash collection. Currently I only have two pairs of waders, so most kids can only get in the creek as far as their mud boots will let them. Have a dozen waders will allow my students to dive in to being a stream biologist up to their chests. It would allow them all to learn to use the kick net and measure the depth of the creek. These waders would allow a classroom of 30 urban kids to become real scientists.
