Starting from the first day of school, my students have been asking to learn about black history. From slavery to the civil rights movement, they are deeply curious about black history. I have a classroom library, but it is seriously lacking in black history books. With an additional bookshelf, book displays, and a stocked library of black history books, my students can finally have the resources to learn about this part of history. I will be teaching about some of the topics, but my curriculum doesn't deeply explore the topics I want to bring to my students through these books. Black history shouldn't just be for one month of the year. Several of my students have asked for black history books, and this project can provide that for them. My students are required to read 20 books each semester, and this addition to my library would diversify their options and satisfy a serious need in my classroom.
