Many students find nonfiction text to be complex and dry, and my hope is by pulling in this novel-length piece of nonfiction, they can see how fascinating this form of writing truly is. Access to quality novel-length nonfiction is challenging, but oh-so-necessary. As I help to prepare my students for the AP exam they take in the spring, I would like to use this text to highlight some of the main components they will see on the test. The structure of the text and Capote's word choice make this a prime example of quality writing. The key to this class is analyzing a writer's choices (rhetoric), and I can think of no other text that leaves a profound impression on the reader and holds their attention at the same time. I feel that this text will be ideal, and I can't wait to put it in the hands of my students.
