This project is requesting outdoor science materials - clipboards, measuring tapes, bug boxes, and butterfly nets. With these data collection tools, students will conduct their own scientific research at the local dog park to present to the parks and rec department. They will get practice observing, collecting data, measuring transect lines, collecting specimen for analysis--all to create a biodiversity index of the neighboring dog park. Right now, the biology curriculum has students inside for the majority of the year. Students do better when they have authentic, real-world projects that focus on their own community. Biology is the study of LIFE, so we need to be outside, studying the health of our urban ecosystem. These tools will allow my students to break down barriers, get outside, and see themselves as scientists.
