I teach middle school social studies. Current events are an important aspect of helping students make sense of the world around them and connecting it to different social studies topics such as: history, geography, and economics. I have used Scholastic Junior in the past with my students to great success! They find the articles to be relevant to them and insightful. They are a great springboard into class discussions which enrich the curriculum in so many ways. I have found that if I have a student who is reluctant to engage in other curricular activities they often will find these magazines engaging. These magazines are enhanced with many lesson plan materials that are well made and meet the standards I am required to teach. Most importantly they help students to see the relevance and interconnections of current events in their lives. I hope that will translate into a desire to be better informed as citizens which is critical for the future of our country!
