When students arrive in fifth grade, they have big shoes to fill. They have now become the role models in the school. They also take on a lot of extra work. In North Carolina, 5th grade students take the 5th grade Science test. I don't want to lecture my students day in and day out. My goal is to have students learn from me and each other. The lab coats will bring the science lessons alive and make experiments even more enjoyable. The STEM books will allow me to incorporate 21st century skills into each lesson. Math can be a scary subject for kids, but it does not have to be. In 5th grade, students spend most of the year covering fractions. In my experience as a math teacher, students understand the concept of fractions when they are able to visualize and make real world connections. The fraction stories will bring the real world connections in. I plan to use the fraction tiles so that students can touch them and see them to understand fractions. Who doesn't like to play games? With the fraction games, students can have fun while learning fraction skills at the same time! Lastly, the most powerful time of the day for a teacher is his small group time. This is the time where I can pull students in and work with them at their level to help build them up to where they need to be. I would love for them to have stools to sit at my small group table. I've seen the stools used in other classrooms and they are much cooler than the hard chairs that kids are forced to sit in daily.
