Hard hit by budget cuts, our school district continually has to make do with less and less. Although 43% of our school is socioeconomically disadvantaged, we are not awarded extra funds from the state because we are not designated as a Title 1 school. We have to depend on the donations of parents. However; our school is located in the middle of one of the hardest hit foreclosure areas, and unemployment in our school community is at an all time high. Therefore, we receive very little money from parents and even the funds received from school fundraisers has dwindled. Class sizes have been increased due to budget restraints, and we need to find new ways to meet the needs of more students. Programs such as Donors Choose and Chevron Classroom Challenge are the student's best hope to obtain the document reader that will lead to their success.
