After discussing the novels the students read with a colleague, I realized the students never read about diverse characters in literature. I was inspired by a Master's presentation that aimed to introduce diverse literature into the curriculum and study if the students became more engaged in their novels. The results spoke for themselves, when the students have choice and can identify with a character, they will read. Diverse students often find it difficult to connect to characters in novels because they don't see similarities between them. The struggle for identity is a huge part of high school culture. My students want to read literature that sparks their true identity and makes them feel like they are a part of something bigger.
With these new books the students will be able to learn about situations happening in the real world and discover things they never knew existed.
My students will be able to make a change, make a difference. They will become engaged in world literature and find new ways to discover who they truly are. It is important to break down stereotypes and build a strong and safe community.
